Our studio is in a small town Hiji-machi, Oita-prefecture facing the Beppu-bay surrounded by rich and calm nature.  We produce various kind of “Tsuchi-ningyou” the traditional clay dolls or “Dorei-ningyou” the doll-shaped clay bells including “Maneki-neko” by all hand-made.  In the past clay dolls were well-liked by common people who could not afford silk or cotton puppets.  It is said that farmers started to make clay dolls in the agricultural off-season in winter with the clay(soil) from their field.  Then spring came, they downed the mountain and sold them to the folks in the city.  As you already know the Japanese traditional doll ceremony  “Hina-matsuri” is in the Spring on March.  Old clay dolls are hard to say “polished” or “sophisticated” but you can find something “beyond beauty and ugliness” in them.  (If interested see about “MINGEI” through internet)  Can you Imagine that kids at that time could hardly wait for spring when their parents presented clay dolls as their toys?  It is our pleasure if you enjoy this Japanese traditional custom of folk toys and hand it down to the next generation.
Thank you.
